2. Engine
The engine is the powerhouse of your motor vehicle, and as it does so much work, it’s also put under an enormous strain. If your engine fails, then your car will be completely unusable and the costs can be vast. Just ask the owner of one particular Porsche 911, who was faced with a repair bill of £8709, or the owner of an Audi A1 whose engine repairs added up to £6254. As the engine is so complex and has so many components, it can sometimes be difficult to spot developing problems, but the more miles it has on the clock, the more likely it is to fail.
3. Gearbox
The third most expensive component to repair in 2018 was the gearbox, as a McLaren MP4 owner faced a bill for £6084 to have theirs repaired. Of course, the costs will be lower for vehicles outside of the luxury car bracket, but gearbox repairs can still easily head into four figures. There are many factors which can lead to gearbox problems, with inadequate lubrication and failed bearings being among the most common. Listen out for unusual noises when changing gears, or difficulty when moving up or down.
Other particularly expensive parts of a car to repair include the fuel system, clutch and differential and with these, and the three components mentioned above, the most common cause is wear and tear.
