Well over a million cars are scrapped each year here in the UK, with the majority processed by Authorised Treatment Facilities like our partners here at Scrap Car Network. And while those figures will encompass a hugely diverse array of vehicles, there are certain models which have a noticeably more sizeable presence than others! So if you decided ‘I need to scrap my car’ at any point in the last twelve months, you may now be idly wondering – was mine one of the top vehicles scrapped in 2023? Here’s where you can find out!
No surprises here. The high scrappage figures of the Ford Focus doesn’t reflect a lack of trust in the car, but rather reflects its status as one of the single most popular cars in the UK (as it has been for some time now!). It’s got a wide variety of things going for it – it’s economical, its efficient, comfortable and easy to drive. Predictably, that makes it an incredibly popular car, particularly for new drivers.
Hot on the heels of Ford comes the Vauxhall Corsa, another timelessly popular car that’s favoured for its cost-efficiency and reliability. It’s also pretty manoeuvrable, which makes it a popular choice for inner cities and other dense urban areas. It’s also got a number of other things going for it too – it’s got plenty of interior space (handy for families) and it’s pretty stylish to boot, too. Again, always a draw for younger drivers!
Spotting a pattern? Yes, Ford and Vauxhall were amongst two of the top manufacturers whose cars were scrapped in 2023. It takes a lot to top out the top contenders for the most popular car in the UK (including, incidentally, the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Corsa), but the Fiesta manages it! More than once, it’s been named as the nation’s best-selling vehicle. It’s fun to drive, easy to repair, and cheap to run – all of which are pretty big tick-boxes for drivers across the nation. Like the Ford Focus, the Fiesta’s high stats don’t necessarily reflect its lack of reliability (quite the contrary) – more just the sheer number of them on the road.
Closing out our short list, the British-made Vauxhall Astra also tends to earn top marks from drivers in the areas of reliability, versatility and affordability. Vauxhall Astras are generally easy to maintain too, given the wide availability of parts and components: ranging from transmissions and body panels all the way up to more expensive parts like engines and catalytic converters. That means when an Astra finally ends up facing the scrapyard, you can normally count on the fact that it’s not a decision that’s been made lightly – it’s generally really been put through its paces beforehand!
